Updated a few hours later after having pasted my latest post from wordpress back to Spaces

March 19 5 years and still countingBTW - did I tell you, I completed 5 years at Microsoft on 8th March (Hurrah!!). Will post snaps of the trophy and braggy sticker that I will get to show off as soon as I get them (either it hasnt reached India from Redmond or my manager hasn't realised that the little box that has been shipped from Redmond to him has something important enough for him to open it ;)).
Anyways..so looking back at the 5 years - here are things that make me still stick to this organisation
1. Managers - I have been lucky ALWAYS to get awesome managers. PERIOD. I can say this without skipping a beat. Managers from whom I have learnt every single day, managers who can sit and listen to all the rantings that I do, managers who would give me freedom, managers who respect diversity and meritocracy. I am a big big fan of all my managers (ex and present).
2. People - Microsoft is ..what its employees are..so its impossible to love the company without loving the people working in it. Super smart, super fun and super interesting. It makes me feel proud to rub shoulders with them, to be a part of them each day. Want to meet some of them ? Spot them here.
3. The work we do - Cliched but true, its an amazing feeling to look at something that millions are using and say "hey I was a PM for this, this button you are clicking - I decided where it should be and what should its behavior be". I remember when I saw chapters written on Team Build in VSTF books - I would get a childish thrill :)
Its been 5 years now but I still get that thrill whenever I see anything I have worked on being used or talked about by anyone. I wish I never outgrow this feeling !
4. Culture - Its open, its aggressive yet friendly, respects diversity, it gives you a voice and freedom.
Three cheers to me and three cheers to this company I love..

February 25 Guess who broke the law todayWe were getting late to work today (err..is that something new ?)...so we were zipping past the traffic in our car. Now we took this route which passes through the Pullela Gopichand Badminton Academy gate and when we were just about a few metres away from that gate - a red car came out of it and took the wrong (read 'short' for many folks in India) side of the road. Clearly the driver did not want to take the rather long (another few mts down the road) U turn and thought it would be faster to take the wrong route for a couple of minutes. So as usual Vineet and I went into this "What the..." mode and then we realised - lo behold! the driver was none other than our Indian badminton champ Saina Nehwal..probably coming out of the academy after a bad practise day?? Hmmm..if this is what our role models do then we do have very little hope..what say? December 21 Proud Day for India Its not even been a month and the Trident and Taj hotels start welcoming their guests all over again from today. I wish I were in Mumbai today to go and stand by them and say that "Yes we are with you" and stand against them who thought they could destroy these icons of our country so easily. Yes we are shaken but havent lost. When I go next to Mumbai I am sure which hotel would I stay in and I will do it over and over and over again...no we cannot lose. We are proud to be Indians, proud about the hospitality the hotel staff are showing everyone today inspite of all that they have suffered, proud of the General Manager of Taj who lost his wife and two sons and yet fought minute by minute to save the lives of others. To them - "we all stand by you and will not let you lose, not let this country lose..." February 28 Views from my seat
By the virtue of the fact that I happen to be one of the 'oldest' (in terms of the numbers of years in MS) IC (Individual contributor) in my team - I get to occupy the 'corner' cubicle which has a window. MS reminds me of my childhood where we would fight for "window" seats in the school bus and I wouldn't mind waking up a few minutes early each morning to ensure that I am ahead in the queue to get the 'window' seat. MS is pretty much the same - a "window" office, "window" cubicle is for the ones who got in first and is in many ways prized. If you cross a office which is a "window" office and especially in Redmond if it is NOT shared - you know you are crossing a biggie's den. But recently I have started valuing my window cubicle a lil more than I ever did. Reason? 1. Cause I recently went to Redmond and it had changed alot from my last visit a few years back. And I feel that a private, high walled cubicle is ANYDAY better than a 'shared' office :) 2. I casually walked to the new building (Building 3) of our campus in Hyderabad and got a shock. It is still under construction and supposedly the entire product development team will move in to that building. The building is just a colorful ocean of cubes and has nothing of that 'wonderful', 'open' and 'slick' feeling that the current buildings give. There is hardly any breathing space and its 'cost cutting' at its best if you ask me. And yes there are NO window cubicles. There are window offices (apparently overlooking golf greens and lakes) but cubicles from which you can pretty much see nothing. A classic case of the "rich gets richer and the poor gets poorer".
February 04 Microsoft Conference Call VideoIf you are an MS employee and have ever used the MS conf bridge ..then look at the video below ..it is hilarious. You can remember this and feel less bored while you wait for other "parties" to join the conf call. And even if you are not an MS employee - do look at it ...good fun ! |
